Ken Rubio

Ken is a dynamic and powerful drummer who first picked up the sticks at the age of nine. In his teens he got a solid musical foundation from his private teacher and current bandmate, Gary St. Germain.  Ken went on to earn the prestigious John Phillip Souza Award and he played in the High School Honor Band, Honor Orchestra, and the San Bernardino County All Star High School Jazz Band. Ken studied mallet percussion with Karen Erwin and Latin percussion with the legendary Jerry Steinholtz at CA State University Northridge. He has also studied privately with some of the best drummers in the world, including Michael Stephans, and Tom Brechtlein. Ken has played in several rock, dance, jazz combo, and big bands including The Bill Winters Big Band and the Mt. San Jacinto College Jazz Ensemble. He has performed with such notable musicians as Plas Johnson, Lee Oscar, Gloria Loring, and Grammy award winners George Whitty and Carmen Bradford. Ken continues to freelance in So. California with popular bands such as the dynamic rock/dance band, Fear of Phobias. His influences include Buddy Rich, Lenny White, Richie Hayward, and Stewart Copeland. Ken draws upon his wealth of experience to add the sensitive technical finesse, and the explosive energetic prowess needed for this dynamic jazz quintet.
